Before the federation existed...
The first Opel GT Clubs were founded at the end of the 1970s. The first clubs include, for example, the Opel GT Club Nederland and the GT Club Berlin. Over time, more and more companies were founded.
The first meetings were also organized. On October 11, 1980, the first major Opel GT meeting took place at the Nürburgring, which was organized by the GT Club Württemberg and the Opel GT Club Nederland. There were over 400 Opel GTs and almost 1,000 visitors present.
Several clubs emerged from this meeting and contacts became increasingly closer. The “Zentralstelle der GT Clubs" (Central Office of the GT Clubs) was also formed under the leadership of Gerd Krause. The club scene grew bigger and bigger; as early as 1981 there were regular board meetings of the Opel GT Clubs.
From this merger, the “Federation of European Opel GT Clubs” was formed in February 1983.
Founding of the federation in 1983
The two Belgian Opel GT Clubs joined in the spring of 1990. Since the Opel GT Club Nederland was regularly represented, the European umbrella organization was created. As a result, clubs from Switzerland, Alsace and Denmark also joined.
Until 2011, the board consisted exclusively of German members, but an international board team was elected in the fall. With the new composition of the board in autumn 2023, an international team was also elected and the European idea continued to be lived.
Since autumn 2012, individual drivers have also been able to join the federation as supporting members.
The Opel GT Club Sweden joined the federation in 2013 and the Entraide Opel GT (FR) in 2017. Since then, only 30% of the members are German-speaking. Our community includes around 1,400 GT owners from nine countries.
Traditionally, a club affiliated with the federation organizes a large Opel GT meeting at Pentecost. This meeting was initially the “Germany meeting”. Since 1993, this meeting has been known as the “European Meeting”.
